Today is a very special day here at Dailies, because today celebrates distance learning, which is learning that takes place outside of a physical classroom setting. World Distance Day is celebrated every August 31st and embraces all of the students, teachers, and families who are taking a less traditional (but increasingly popular!) approach to education.
A Quick History of Distance Learning
Did you know that the concept of distance learning has been around for almost 300 years?! Back in 1728, a man named Caleb Phillips advertised a new method of shorthand in The Boston Gazette, where he would mail the lessons out each week. One hundred years later in England, Sir Isaac Pitman added onto this concept and had the students mail in their work, which he would grade and send back. In 1969, The Open University was founded, which takes credit for distance learning courses and then in 1984, The University of Toronto introduced the first ever online course. With the development of the internet, distance courses have only become more popular.
Examples of Distance Learning
There are two types of distance learning: remote and hybrid. Remote learning refers to a program that is completed entirely online while hybrid learning is a program that takes place both online and in-person. Both of these formats have proven to be successful, especially when COVID was at its peak. Even now that many schools have reopened with their regular calendars and schedules, distance learning has remained popular due to its cost-effectiveness and scheduling flexibility.
Benefits of Distance Learning
As a graduate of Pacific Oaks College, a school that offers (and encourages) distance learning, I am very thankful for a day like today! Distance learning allowed me the opportunity to graduate with a degree in exactly what I wanted without having to disrupt my life and move to another state. I was working full-time and the ability to do my school work at my own pace let me manage my time in a way that best suited my schedule. Class interactions were done via discussion posts, video chats, and messaging and we even had group projects! The assumption that distance learning might be isolating is definitely not the way to think; I found myself being able to connect on a deeper level with my classmates because we all were in a similar situation of time and schedule management. The best part of graduating was that I actually flew from Illinois to California to walk the stage and finally meet my classmates!
Benefits of Distance Learning with Dailies
After graduating, it would only make sense that I come onboard with Dailies, a company dedicated to distance learning and home education for students located all over the United States! Dailies was founded to give students and their families the opportunity to take control of their educational journey. We offer students a chance for a personalized, yet diverse learning experience along with the excitement of meeting friends and teachers across the country.
