Time to Play, Time to Celebrate: Learning About Labor Day

Today is Labor Day and you might be celebrating your day off with a barbeque in the backyard, a swim in the pool, or maybe even participating in a parade. But, do you know the reason for these festivities? Let’s take a look at what Labor Day is all about and why we celebrate it.

What is Labor Day?

Labor day is a federal holiday celebrated in the United States on the first Monday of September. It’s a day that honors the hard work and achievements of American workers and the labor movement.

Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?

Labor Day is not just about picnics or parades; it is a day to recognize and appreciate the contributions of every worker in every field. Whether it’s the teachers who educate us, the doctors and nurses who keep us healthy, the farmers who grow our food, or the chefs or prepare that food, every job is important and every worker deserves to be honored.

A Quick History of Today

In the 19th century, many people worked very long hours in unsafe conditions. Some of these workers were even kids as young as five years old! With little pay and no security, it was a tough time for everyone. But, brave men and women came together to stand up for their rights and demanded better working conditions. They formed unions and formed peaceful protests to speak up for fair pay, reasonable hours, and safer workplaces.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day parade was held in New York City in 1882, quickly gaining popularity. People from all walks of life joined together to celebrate the achievements of the workers union. In 1894, Labor Day became an official holiday thanks to these courageous individuals!

Celebrating Labor Day

As mentioned, you might be celebrating today with a day off of school or work, surrounded by family and friends. Here are some other fun ways you can celebrate:

  • Picnic in the Park: Pack a yummy lunch, grab a big blanket, and head to your favorite park! Don’t forget to bring a Frisbee or soccer ball!
  • DIY Parade: If your neighborhood is not hosting a Labor Day parade, create your own! Decorate wagons, bikes, scooters, and strollers and march around the block!
  • Thank You Cards: Take time to appreciate the hard workers in your community by making some handmade thank you cards for your mail carrier, garbage collector, fire fighters, or teachers!

It’s important to remember that today is more than just a day off; it’s a day to reflect on the incredible achievements of American workers both past and present and to share a big THANK YOU for your hard work, your dedication, and your resilience!
