International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8th and is a global day dedicated to celebrating achievements of women everywhere. These achievements are social, economic, cultural, political, and most importantly, historical; these achievements are celebrated because they demonstrate the valuable contributions women have made and are continuing to make to our world.

A Past History of Brave Women

Long before Beyoncé was reminding us of who runs the world, women were advocating for equal rights. Perhaps the most notable political activists were Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who founded the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) in 1869, and officially launched women into the political landscape. The NWSA was invested in securing not only the right to vote, but the right to equal pay, improved working conditions, and general representation under the law.

In 1909, the first National Women’s Day was observed and in 1910, an International Women’s Conference was organized by Clara Zetkin, a German suffragist leader. Zetkin proposed a special Women’s Day to be celebrated annually and internationally. The following year, this Day was honored in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, with more than a million attending the rallies. In 1965, the women’s liberation movement continued to fight for women’s rights and ALL women were given the right to vote.

A Continued History of Brave Women

With the development of the internet and social media, International Women’s Day has truly transformed the lives of all women around the world. We are posting, sharing, and celebrating both famous leaders and everyday women. Thanks to the development of hashtags, we can join in conversations across the globe to realize that while women’s rights have greatly improved, there is still a lot of work to be done.

The United Nations has declared the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day as; “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” and has claimed the hashtag #InvestInWomen as the official conversation starter across the world.

Celebrating International Women’s Day

Investing in women’s rights simply starts as asking your child what women they look up to, who inspires them, who they aspire to be like. Encourage them to not only name musicians, writers, actresses, and other celebrities, but to think about teachers, family members, and neighbors.

Ask questions, read books, research history; observe and reflect on similarities and differences between you and women you admire. All women are connected through similar experiences and the history of International Women’s Day is a testament to women’s strength and resilience. When we invest in women, when we work together to stand up for our rights and beliefs, we are truly accelerating progress and changing the world.
