Awakening New Depths On World Oceans Day

If you have ever been to the ocean, you can understand the feeling of staring out into what feels like endless water, wondering to yourself, “I wonder how far this goes” or maybe even, “I wonder what else is out there.” These questions bring us to the importance of today, World Oceans Day. We rely on the ocean for so much, yet there are still so many unanswered questions. Today is a day to raise awareness and call to action the importance of keeping our oceans clean for generations to come.

What Is World Oceans Day?

World Oceans Day is celebrated every year on June 8th and is dedicated to informing and educating the world on the importance of the oceans. While the themes may change each year, the goal is always the same; unite the world on a project for sustainable management of the oceans.

The Importance of Today

Did you know that the ocean covers more than 70% of the planet? Or that it produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen? The ocean is our lifesource, it sustains humanity and ALL life on earth. Many of us may not realize the extreme importance of the ocean; we simply see it as a fun place to relax on vacation. This is not a bad thing, but it does prove just how important World Oceans Day is. Whether they are considered supportive or not, human actions will forever have and have an impact on the ocean. In our current times, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. This day raises global awareness to remind us that it is our duty, both individually and collectively, to use its resources in a sustainable manner so that future generations may continue to thrive.

Awaken New Depths in 2024

Each year, World Oceans Day centers around a theme that raises awareness for specific issues the oceans are facing. This year, the theme is “Awaken New Depths” and is dedicated to counteracting the short-sighted or impulsive decisions that are further declining our oceans. This year is focused on sustainable decisions while continuing to research all that the oceans have to offer. For all the resources that humans rely on, we have still only explored about 10% of the oceans. 2024 is a year to change our relationship with the oceans, to build back, to awaken new depths.

World Oceans Day At Home

Not everyone is lucky enough to live near an ocean but there are still plenty of ways to celebrate and raise awareness.

  • Take the “wear blue, tell two” challenge! Blue is the official color of the ocean, therefore it’s the official color of World Oceans Day. Wear blue today and share two facts with someone about the ocean!
  • Create a 10% chart: Just how much have we (or haven’t we) discovered about the ocean? Draw a big circle, but only color in about 10% of it – discuss what else you think could be living deep down in the sea.
  • Reduce, reuse, and recycle: Take some time to think about ways your family can cut back on wasteful materials, as most of our materials all stem from the ocean.
  • Check out The Ocean Agency: a website that takes viewers on a 360 degree view of different areas of the ocean!
  • Read books, sing songs, draw pictures: For younger children, simply reading books and singing songs are a great way to introduce the concept of the ocean. Encourage them to draw a picture of their favorite fish and display it in your home!

Keeping the ocean clean, safe, and sustained is the best way to ensure that our current population and future generations can lead clean, safe, and sustainable lives. Taking simple steps to change the way we live is the best way to maintain a healthy world. Check out WorldOceansDay.org for more information on how and where to get involved!
